The Secret to Continual Optimization – Lessons from the Bus

The Secret

The secret to continual optimization is picking up the most helpful tool in your business acumen toolbox and putting it to use.

Taking the time to employ the tool known as proper systems in your construction business is surprisingly effective, often neglected, and brings a newfound perspective.

Through the formal inclusion of proper systems, you gain the ability to:

  1. Improve the things you already do.

  2. Find new things that make what you do even better.

*KA-POW*

Most construction contractors know about the tool but never pick it up. Some pick it up, turn it on, and the clattering noise they hear (because they don’t know how to use the tool) is enough to make them drop it. A few embrace the power of the tool and find themselves Running With the Big Dogs!

Is This You?

We’ve heard many stories about construction company owners or managers purchasing a new app, buying into a new SaaS, or attending a You Can Do It motivational speaker’s session only to continue struggling in the day-to-day “stuff.” Unfortunately, the problem is that they don’t know how to use the information or tech or don’t know how to incorporate it in forming their proper systems.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Corporate level construction companies, The Big Dogs (as we fondly call them,) know about and use the proper systems tool very effectively. Because our mission involves helping small to medium construction companies Run With the Big Dogs, we’ve become adept at assisting them in taking advantage of the proper systems tool.

Some of What We’ve Learned – Or lessons from the bus

Some of the things to keep in mind when you begin incorporating proper systems:

  • It will most likely feel like you’re trying to change the tires on a moving bus.

  • There will be a need to get everyone on board as you proceed.

  • You can’t get from point A to point B if you don’t keep going.

  • Communication is imperative even when the road bumps cause jostling and noise.

  • Roadblocks and detours happen, so modifying your approach as you learn something new is essential.

  • Rush hour is inevitable, and traffic can get clogged, be patient.

  • The road (eventually) smooths out.

Optimize Through Empowering Others

Your employees are in charge of the different parts of your systems. Remind them the goal is to optimize your construction company’s performance continually.

Let them know their efforts can mean incremental improvement over time or a breakthrough improvement all at once.

Optimize the Optimization Process

There will be growing pains in learning new technologies or new ways of doing things. And those moments will be (as crazy as it may seem) good for you. Once you’ve learned that you and your team can deal with the bus issues as they arise, you can deal with more or different bus problems.

With proper systems in place, you’ll become better and better at looking for, finding, and implementing improvements. You can optimize the optimization process.
