What’s in a Title?

What’s in a name or title?

Occasionally, I can’t help myself. I borrow from The Bard, William Shakespeare. He asked (through the voice of Romeo,) ”What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” My question became, “What’s in a title?”

You’ll see what I mean when you think of the difference in being called a Secretary or being known as an Executive Assistant, Stewardess or Flight Attendant, Truck Driver or Transportation Specialist, Skilled Worker or Craftsman.

Before going further, I’ve just got to mention the most extravagant (and perhaps a little nutsy) title I’ve ever seen. The title former Ugandan President, Edi Amin bestowed upon himself was, “His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, CBE, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular"

Well, well now.

The hierarchy of titles

I discovered a list of titles meant to give newly hired people a guide to the hierarchy at certain businesses.

· Chief Executive Officer

· Chief Operating Officer

· Chief Financial Officer

· President

· Executive Vice President

· Senior Vice President

· Vice President

· Assistant Vice President

· Associate Vice President

· Senior Director

· Director

· Assistant Director

· Manager

· Middle Manager of people or a function

· Employees, freelancers, contract employees, temporary employees, contingent employees. part-time employees

And of course, while the above titles may be found in the construction industry there are a few others which can be thrown into the mix:

· Foreman

· Supervisor

· Manager of Construction

· Job superintendent

· Project superintendent

· General superintendent

Speaking of titles

So recently, it was with the thought of having some fun yet still getting the point across that titles were bestowed on the team members here at The Profit Constructors.

It was determined to make the job titles carry the weight of being a miniature summary of the various jobs folks perform around here. But the summaries are only part of the titles.

And, oh those titles

The titles are colorful while still being accurate.

Are you ready for this?

So, what’s in a title?

In some construction companies, it is a guide to hierarchy.

For other contracting businesses, the status may be at play.

Some building businesses give titles based on “this is how it has always been.”

And, for The Profit Constructors, titles are to let you know who does what and how doggone good at it they are — just saying. 😎
